Safety of Non-Alcoholic Wine

Non-alcoholic wine provides the delicious taste and texture of regular wine, without the risk of alcohol. All of our wine recommendations have been dealcoholized to 0.0%, meaning they are perfectly safe for all ages to enjoy. While there are wines on the market that have been dealcoholized to 0.5%, we have intentionally left those options out of our suggestions.

During the winemaking process, our non-alcoholic wines are produced similar to their alcoholic counterparts. However, in the very last stages, alcohol is removed from the wine. This means that non-alcoholic wines have flavor and complexity similar to traditional wines but without the negatives caused by alcohol.

Of course, when deciding on what’s right for you, it’s always important to check with your primary care doctor and seek his or her opinion. Learn more about any potential risks with alcoholic or non-alcoholic wine during pregnancy or breastfeeding. At Wines for Mothers, nothing is more important to us than the safety of the women who consume our product. Our goal is to provide safe, delicious and sophisticated products to pregnant and nursing women.

So What Exactly Is Non-Alcoholic Wine and How Is It Made?

Non-alcoholic wine was first patented in 1908. However, the alcohol content of those products, and many products available on the market today, still hovered at about 0.5% alcohol by volume. It wasn’t until more recently, through the use of modern technologies, that wines were finally able to be dealcoholized to 0.0% or less than 0.05% alcohol by volume. Our Top Picks are limited to wines that meet our 0.0% requirement.

Now, this begs the questions, if you take the alcohol out of wine, doesn’t that make it grape juice? Honestly, it’s a bit more complicated than that. In fact, making non-alcoholic wine isn’t very different from making regular wine. First, wine is made exactly as it normally would be—alcohol included. Once grapes have been gathered, pressed and fermented, the wine is ready to be dealcoholized.

Winemakers use two main ways to remove the alcohol: distillation and filtration. Distillation is the process of distilling the alcohol off the wine through steam. Producers put the wine into a strong vacuum and heat it. As the suction of the vacuum increases, the boiling temperature of the wine decreases. This allows winemakers to heat the wine at temperatures as low as 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which distills the alcohol without overheating the wine.

The second method of removing alcohol is through filtration or reverse osmosis. With filtration, winemakers use extremely high pressure to force the wine against a membrane so fine only water and alcohol can seep through it. The process is repeated until the wine becomes a concentrate. Water is then added back into the concentrate to create non-alcoholic wine.

Why Drink Non-Alcoholic Wines?

  1. Pregnancy safe wines allow new mothers and mothers-to-be the opportunity to enjoy their social, sophisticated lifestyles without feeling left out. Sometimes celebrations don't seem as special when toasting with just juice and soda, which are often overly sweet.
  2. Studies actually show that non-alcoholic red wine is good for the heart thanks to polyphenols found in the wine.
  3. Non-alcoholic wines are perfect options for birthday parties and other children's events. Everyone can enjoy the wines.
  4. They are a safe way to satisfy those wine cravings while pregnant. Rich and complex yet safe to enjoy.
